Your votes have been counted and here are links to the winners. Time to read: 2.5 days with no meal breaks A hearty shout-out to all my Richmonders, Henricoans, Chesterfielders, Goochlandians, Short Pumpers, Oregon Hill Cats, Bumtowners, River Rats, rogue EMTs and “Solid Gold” 804 dancers. Two of those actually are boy gangs from the Civil War-era, did you spot them? (Hint: It’s so easy, there is no acceptable prize.) In TikTok-like accordance with the visual, pop-up book culture of memes starting to dominate our adult communication, we’ll begin by asking you to imagine a backward waterfall of yellow, heart-clutching…

How a Richmond bookstore that is focused on BIPOC authors could be part of a growing trend. Krystle Dandridge was frustrated. The psychological counselor and avid reader is a fan of Black authors. But she noticed that titles by them were typically only displayed in bookstores during Black History Month and then quietly removed. “Seventy to 75% of published authors are white,” she says. So, she decided to do something about it. In February, she opened The Book Bar at 1311 E. Main St. in downtown Richmond. The cozy shop features books by authors who are Black, indigenous and people…

Taylor Scott and her volunteers are expanding RVA Community Fridges to a dozen locations. Her apartment overflowing with tomatoes, Taylor Scott was on the hunt for a community fridge so she could share the bounty of her home hydroponic farm with neighbors in need. The concept of community fridges — publicly accessible appliances stocked with fresh food for people facing hunger and hard times — was not new to the New Orleans native, but hard as she looked, she couldn’t find any in Richmond. That’s when Scott decided to create her own. Her hope was to establish the first fridge…

One of Richmond’s most beloved rock frontmen brings his honky-tonk records to The Camel. Bring a date or find a mate … who knows, maybe both? That’s how things roll when Valient Himself, a.k.a. Herbie Abernethy, ponies up at the decks to deliver some good ole’ fashioned twang bangers. His upcoming DJ performance this Sunday, Aug.21 at The Camel promises to be a good time, worthy of writing home to grandma. Fresh off a killer tour that included a festival date with Judas Priest in Spain, the fuzzy-faced frontman for iconic heavy metal band, Valient Thorr, just celebrated 20 years…

After watching the video for “Candelabra Eyes,” you might be convinced there are two Russell Lacys. Over haunting crooning and unsettling guitars, images of Lacy’s face flick between white and red lighting — the former calm, the latter crazed — before blue and white Lacys begin to sing while superimposed over one another. Directed by R. Anthony Harris, with crucial contributions from Director of Photography Joey Wharton, the clip is part-Dr. Jekyll, part-Mr. Hyde and entirely suited to the song’s ominous sound. There may be only one Lacy in real life, but the multi-instrumentalist and Richmond native keeps busy on…

Me Too drama “Spin Me Round” loses the thread, while “Orphan: First Kill” loses its reviewer. Plus Michael Mann’s “Heat” gets a sequel novel. Screenwriter and director Jeff Baena’s “Spin Me Round” keeps throwing ideas at you. For a while, the movie appears to be heading toward a premise that’s simple and eerie, until Baena reveals it to be but a stop on an ongoing tour of passing fancies. One doesn’t expect to compare a Baena movie with a Jordan Peele production, but that’s where I find myself here. Like “Nope,” which has enough semiotic significance for 20 movies and…

A survey of some of the top options at Hatch Food Hall. Those of us of a certain age who spent our ‘80s childhoods at the local mall can well remember the allure of the food court. Those neon-lit arenas boasting relics like Sbarro and Orange Julius were both the fuel and the backdrop to afternoons of adolescent social networking. While that mash up of fast food extravagance and open seating tailor-made for loitering may no longer exist anywhere other than the Starcourt mall of “Stranger Things” fame, the appeal of communal dining is alive and well. Grown-up and fancified…

RVA Duck Race and Festival of Inclusion at Brown’s Island on Saturday, Aug. 20 Maybe our favorite pitch-line this week: The Quack is Back! The Autism Society of Central Virginia (ASCV) is hosting the popular RVA Duck Race in conjunction with a new Festival of Inclusion, scheduled to be Richmond’s “first sensory-friendly festival designed to include and accommodate individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities.” How it works: The little toy ducks are sold online leading up to the event. With each entry, participants get to watch the duck float down the canal and race to the finish line. Organizers…
