Peaches and Kalifa at the National on Thursday, Aug. 25

What else is in the teaches of Peaches? Huh, what? Come to the National on Thursday night and find out when the boundary-pushing feminist musician, producer, and performance artist, Merill Nisker (aka Peaches), brings the circus to town for what surely will be a memorable performance with flashy dance moves, fried guitar and myriad costume changes. The Berlin-based, Canadian musician has collaborated with artists from Yoko Ono and Kim Gordon to Daft Punk and the Flaming Lips, and on this tour she’ll be celebrating the 20th anniversary of her electro-rock classic, “Teaches of Peaches,” which barely contains her most recognizable song, “Fuck the Pain Away” (NPR said the album “shifted the window for sex in pop”). Pretty safe bet that this show will be the most theatrical, sex-positive thing happening in RVA on Thursday night. 7:30 p.m.

RVA Outdoor Flea Market at Merchant’s Walk Shopping Center on Saturday, Aug. 27

The sidewalk sale starts at 8 a.m. Admission is free, but remember to bring cash for vendors. 15th Annual Latin Jazz and Salsa Festival at Dogwood Dell amphitheater on Saturday, Aug. 27

A day of highly danceable music headlined by the legendary Herman Olivera, a Puerto Rican “sonero” from Newark, NJ who started out leading the salsa group, Conjunto Libre, and later performed with Johnny Pacheco, Ray Barretto, and performed lead vocals for the Eddie Palmieri Orchestra. He’s won two Grammys, been nominated for four, and performed on over 45 albums. The day also includes Rafael Ortiz and Su Tumbao Urbano All Stars, Kevin Davis, Mike Davidson and the Latin Jazz Messengers, and special guest Beverly Perez. With DJs Rudy Rivera, RVA Bachata, William Estramera Stop the Madness. 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Free parking. To donate or for more info, visit here: https://oasisbroadcastingnetwork.com.

Third annual Crabs and Beer by the James at Brown’s Island on Saturday, Aug. 27

It’s a final, big summer blowout and all-you-can-eat crab fest by the river with headline performances by some all-star Richmond area performers, including the jazz-funk fusion of Butcher Brown and reggae from Mighty Joshua and soul from Legacy Band VA. Others spinning on the bill include DJ Joe Fu, Sir RJ, DJ Drake, DJ MG and more. Rain or shine, lawn chairs are allowed. Tickets range from $10 to $750 (wow, that’s quite a range) and are available here. Runs from noon to 7 p.m. For more info, visit crabsandbeerbythejames.com.
